Aqiqah & Sadaqah Donations: Fulfil the Prophetic Tradition

"Slaughter two comparable sheep for a male newborn and one sheep for a female." (Hadith, Tirmidhi)

When Allah (SWT) blesses your family with a child, the sunnah calls us to respond with worship and generosity. Aqiqah turns the joy of a baby's birth into something bigger.

Through Al Mustafa, this prophetic tradition is fulfilled while its impact is channelled toward communities who rarely access nutrition. The aqiqah meat goes directly to those enduring hardship. Through our free kitchen we cook and deliver your Aqiqah to the orphans, widows, and families trapped in hunger.

AQIQAH

Aqiqah is a prophetic tradition passed down from our beloved Prophet Muhammad (saw)

Scholars classify it as a highly recommended sunnah (sunnah mu'akkadah), and the Prophet ﷺ himself carried it out for his grandsons Imam al-Hasan and Imam al-Husain.

The ideal timing is the seventh day following the baby's birth, but it can be done at a later time if needed. It is a way to demonstrate gratitude for the birth of a beautiful baby and the unlimited blessings from Allah (swt) that have been bestowed upon the family.

After the sacrifice, the newborn's head is shaved. The child's hair is weighed and a charitable contribution matching the same weight in silver is given as sadaqah to the needy.

Aqiqa is a form of sadaqah that helps protect your baby, and also brings you ample reward by feeding those in need. Welcome the arrival of your baby and give thanks to Allah (swt) by performing your Aqiqah.

SADAQAH SACRIFICE

Some people choose to give sadaqah sacrifices as an act of thanks to Allah (swt) if they have been saved from harm.

A sadaqah sacrifice follows a similar path. You might be thanking Allah after recovering from illness, marking something important, or asking for divine protection. The animal is slaughtered and the meat given to those in greatest need.

Importance of Aqiqah

It's so much more than just a ceremony, though. The parents' joy is translated into gratitude to Allah for granting them this new life, a prayer to Him to protect their baby, and the distribution of the meal in charity.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) called on families to celebrate Aqiqah as it invites blessings and protect the new baby. With the meat given out in the form of charity, you feed the poor by feeding others your Aqiqah. A home celebration is turned into direct support to those most in need. It is a noble gesture that embodies a fundamental Islamic principle of selfless giving, helping the less fortunate and recognising that every gift comes with responsibility.

How to Perform Aqiqah

The guardian arranges for one sheep (baby girl) or two comparable sheep (baby boy) to be slaughtered. This should happen on the seventh day after birth if possible. A later time is also acceptable.

The infant's head is then shaved and the hair weighed. A sum reflecting the same weight in silver is directed to the needy. To perform Aqiqah online, Al Mustafa makes it simple. Choose your Aqiqah donation and our teams manage everything from sourcing to distribution.

How We Carry Out Your Aqiqah & Sadaqah Sacrifice

Once your Aqiqah donation online is confirmed, our team at Al Mustafa Canada immediately begins the process. We carefully purchase a healthy animal that fully meets Islamic guidelines. The animal is then humanely sacrificed under proper halal supervision. Afterward, the Aqiqah meat is prepared and distributed to orphans, single-parent households, and families in need.

We handle every Sadaqah sacrifice with the same care and responsibility, ensuring that each portion reaches someone who genuinely needs support.

Aqiqah and Sadaqah Sacrifice

Both involve animal sacrifice to please Allah (SWT) and nourish the hungry. The distinction comes down to intention.

Aqiqah celebrates the birth of a child. A sadaqah sacrifice can be offered at any point, whether as an expression of thanks, a plea for protection, or out of devotion to loved ones.

Lots of families perform both at the same time. They do Aqiqah for the newborn and offer a separate sadaqah on behalf of a relative or friend. In each case, the meat reaches communities enduring poverty.

AQIQAH FAQS

What is Aqiqah?

Aqiqah is the act of sacrificing an animal to mark the occasion of a child’s birth. Ideally, this should be performed seven days after the birth of the child.

“Aqeeqah is the child’s rescue from Satan and protection for his efforts for the good of his life Hereafter.” (Faid al-Qadir)

Why should I perform Aqiqah for my newborn baby?

Performing Aqiqah following the birth of a child is highly recommended for the parent or guardian. This is beneficial, as it helps to unite loved ones and communities on this special occasion.

It also gives us an opportunity to share our celebrations with those less fortunate than ourselves – such as orphans and those in need – by offering the meat from the sacrifice with them.

Why do we shave the baby’s head?

It is the sunnah of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (saw) to shave the baby’s head as a means of purification and the symbol of a new beginning for a Muslim child.

The hair is weighed, and Sadaqah is given to the poor in accordance to the weight of the hair.

The value of this is calculated by donating the amount equivalent to the same weight in silver to the poor. This works out to be approximately £10 at the moment.

What animals are slaughtered for Aqiqah?

Traditionally, a goat or sheep may be sacrificed for Aqiqah, and it can also be a cow or camel. The selection of animal is often dependent on the location. Just like the conditions of sacrifice for Qurbani, that animal must be in good health and be slaughtered in a humane way in line with Islamic guidance.

What distinguishes Aqiqah from sadaqah sacrifice?

Aqiqah is tied to the birth of a child, following the sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ. Sadaqah sacrifice can be offered at any time as an act of gratitude or to seek protection from Allah (SWT).

How many animals are required for baby boy and baby girl to give Aqiqah?

Two (goat or sheep) for a baby boy and one for a baby girl. This is based on the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Is it neccassary to give Aqiqah on the seventh day of the baby's birth?

Giving Aqiqah in Seven Days is highly recommended. If circumstances prevent it, the sacrifice can be completed at a later time.

How do I make an Aqiqah donation online?

Visit the Al Mustafa website, pick your option (baby boy, baby girl, or sadaqah sacrifice), and our teams take care of everything. Donate today.

Where Al Mustafa Canada distributes the Aqiqah meat?

Al Mustafa distributes it directly to orphans, widows, and families living in poverty across our operational regions.

Can Aqiqah be performed for an older child or an adult?

Yes. If it was not carried out at birth, it can be done later. Some scholars also hold that adults may perform it on their own behalf.
